Deer Management for Forest Landowners and Managers: the Series
Deer Management for Forest Landowners and Managers was published in May 2019. It is designed as an all-encompassing how-to book for all kinds of forest landowners on how to reduce the impact of overabundant deer browsing on their forest resources. However, its intimidating length (422 pages) and cost (~ for $45+ for paperback, ~$150 for hardcover) discouraged intended users (consultants, private forest landowners, public forest land managers) from obtaining copies. To make deer management information available at reasonable length and cost to identified categories of forest landowners/managers, individual deer management books are being developed for nine audience types: 1) forestry and wildlife consultants; 2) small (<200 acres) and large (>200 acres) private forest land owners (2 books); 3) commercial forest land owners and managers; 4) public forest land managers (e.g., National Forests and Parks, state and county forest lands); 5) managers of forested residential areas; 6) state and Federal natural resource agency biologists and administrators; 7) cooperatives (groups of neighboring forest landowners who aggregate their properties into one collaborative land management unit); and, 8) deer hunters. Deer Management for Forest Landowners and Managers will remain available as a comprehensive reference for persons wishing to know the scientific and management bases for all 10 books. It is also useful as a college-level text on deer management. |

The two most important components of forest management shared by all forest land owners and managers are: 1) the huge influence of browsing by overabundant deer on understory vegetation; and, 2) as Aldo Leopold, the father of wildlife management in America said, "...deer management is people management." These factors are inseparable parts of forest management and are addressed as co-equally important factors in each book.
